Electromagnetic Induction Bench

Electromagnetic Induction Bench

Move a magnet into and out of a coil. The meter only moves while the magnet is moving. Drag the magnet yourself, or use the buttons.

Pole facing the coil
Coil
Speed

Push the magnet into the coil and watch the needle.

Centre-zero meter (mV)

Magnetic flux inside the coil
No magnet in the coil
EMF over the last few seconds

What to notice

Moving = EMFThe needle moves only while the flux in the coil is changing.
Still = zeroA magnet resting inside the coil gives no EMF, even though it is strong.
Faster = biggerA quicker push changes the flux faster, so the EMF is bigger.
More turns = bigger1000 turns gives twice the EMF of 500 turns. Reversing the pole or the direction flips the needle.

Conclusion: EMF is induced only when the flux changes. It increases with speed and with the number of turns, and it reverses when the direction or the pole is reversed.
